An assignment that had me working close with York University's Laser Cutter and Vinyl Printer to cut, fold, and create box layouts for a gift box pertaining to a theme of my choice. The choice I settled on was a gift box for spicy foods, with a Korean flavour theming that included noodles, with spicy sauces and seasonings.
The goal to was to make something with a unique, cartoon-y, cheerful tone that was still mass-producible.
Preliminary and advanced sketches, with a small moodboard for inspiration. These were aimed to capture the general feel of the box, which involved a more understated exterior, followed by a burst of colour—similar to a burst of heat felt when eating spicy food.
First rendition of the box, titled Like a Dragon—the name furthering this idea of breathing hot fire after eating spicy food, "like a dragon".
Once the general box layout was found to work, I aimed to create what the actual boxes for each noodle set would look like. I sketched out a general look for the spice packets that would be enclosed with each noodle pouch. Moreover, a small, branded wrap to cover the box was also created.
This allowed me to revamp, and upgrade the overall look of my product box as well.
I overhauled the colour scheme to fit Obangsaek, a traditional Korean colour scheme to have the colours more grounded in an idea, while also keeping contrast high.
Each noodle pack is branded and packaged, with each container engraved with a 'heat meter' that tells the level of spiciness at a glance, even should the packaging be lost.
The final portion of the assignment had us make a small unboxing/tutorial video. Wanting to delve into After Effects more, I began sketching and animating immediately, a fruitful process that I enjoyed greatly.
Another personal favourite of mine.
